Everybody knows that diet and exercise are important, but what’s really eye-opening is when someone joins a support group.
You see, if you start a new diet or a new exercise programme (or both) on your own, you’re much more likely to give up than if you joined a support group with other like-minded people.
Social support can be crucial to your long-term weight loss or fitness results.
In a group environment, you are exercising with other women and finding out what they eat, where they eat, what new recipes they have and much more.
If you’re on your own, that can be difficult. Plus, you’re more likely to be around so many negative people – whether that’s at home or at work. And they are your friends and family!! You will be questioned all the time about what you’re eating and why. Plus you get the Quality Street tin pushed under your nose every other day – “Go on, have a sweet, just one, it won’t do any harm.”
So, the social aspect is very important – it makes sense to talk to people who are doing EXACTLY the same programme as you – getting similar results.
You may just think to yourself, “This is what was missing from all my past attempts at losing weight.”
A Swedish study found that the more often people checked into a social group, the greater the results they achieved. The more often they were in there and interacting with people, it gave them better results.
So what it comes down to is when you’re around positive, like-minded people who are trying to get the same results as you, you’re going to get your best results. Remember, you’re the average of the people you spend the most time with.
So, if you’re around people who are questioning why you’re doing things, you’re going to begin to question why you’re doing them. If you surround yourself with people who are reaffirming what you’re doing and encouraging you to do it, that can have a huge impact.
Luckily, if you live in or around Newcastle, I have such a support group. Well, I call it a support group, it’s a fitness support group. Women who can’t lose weight on their own so need that social interaction to make the change they’re looking for.
What’s more, I only offer small group training, which is ideal to get the best results because the emphasis is on technique, posture and individual goals.
