Will eating fat make me fat?

low fat foodsI hear this statement a lot.

I reckon the media have scaremongered people into thinking that eating the dreaded fatty foods will help you to pile the weight on and make you fat.

That’s why you see low-fat this and low-fat that in the supermarket aisles.

Go down the dairy aisle and you’ll see low-fat yogurts, low-fat milk, low-fat cheese…

Go down the ready-meal aisle and you’ll see low-fat lasagne, low-fat pizzas…

Go down the meat and fish aisle and you’ll see low-fat sausage, low-fat bacon, low-fat beef burgers…

You are inundated with it so obviously it makes sense for you to go with it and buy the low-fat alternative products.

Now…

What’s so wrong with this concept?

Well, in my opinion, I think it’s a knee-jerk reaction from the food companies in response to the Government’s strategy on improving public health.

The Government need to be doing something in the public eye that is going to have a major impact on the health of the nation.

So…

They concentrate on fat and the fat content of food products.

They strive to reduce the fat content to make products healthier. The problem with this is that the fat is replaced with added sugars.

Take low-fat yogurts for example. If you look at the label on many of these products, you’ll see that the fat content is either zero or close to zero BUT the sugar content is huge!

You think that eating a low-fat yogurt is healthy but it is far from it. In fact, you’re probably better off choosing a full-fat version with less added sugars. Better still, choosing natural yogurt is much better altogether.

Dare I say this? Eating fat will not make you fat!!

Well, to clarify, I mean eating the RIGHT kind of fats. I’m not talking about piling your plate full of pizzas, pasties and cakes.

I’m talking about healthy fats.

So, what are healthy fats and which foods contain them?

Here’s a starter for you: Nuts, seeds, avocado, oily fish, coconut oil, coconut milk, extra-virgin olive oil, flax seed, chai seeds, free-range eggs.

You see, eating these type of fats is actually GREAT for you! They will NOT make you fat – unless you are still eating lots of pizza, pasties and cakes, that is!

Combining these foods with healthy carbohydrates and protein is your route to success in the weight loss department. You can still enjoy your pizza but in moderation.

All of my eating plans contain recipes and ideas that contain all of these healthy foods, i.e. one-ingredient foods.
